My Thoughts on 'Prince Caspian' (Wednesday Debate)

Okay, sorry that I didn't do a weekly debate thing for a while. Got kind of busy!


I posted something about this a loooong time ago, but my thoughts on that were kind of rushed and not very organized. So I think I'll expand.

First, the book.

I LOVE the book, which is by C.S. Lewis (although I know that everyone knows that). It has battles and rebellions and, very importantly, it's an allegory. It has Christ at the center, and that is what makes it so good to read. Unlike a lot of books that aren't Christian, we don't have to try and kind of 'ignore' the other parts in it that really are not very edifying to read.

The only parts I don't like is the part when (***SPOILER*** if you haven't read the book before) Peter and Susan are told that they won't go back to Narnia. And then, I don't like it because it's sad, not because it's un-godly.

Now, the movie.

Well...I'll say this for it--it was...entertaining.

If it wasn't supposed to be based on 'Prince Caspian', I would have really liked it. It has about as much romance as, say, 'Ratatouille'. But they added on the romance, making it really un-enjoyable for a purist like me, made Caspian really old, and COMPLETELY messed it up! They had Caspian and Peter going at each other's throats (nearly literally) when the book specifically said that they were good friends right off, Susan disrespecting her brother who happens to be the High King, and they really dampened down the allegorical stuff.

One good thing was that they made Edmund really good though. I'd watch it again just to see him. :)

I suppose I like the movie...kind of. I really liked "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" better.

What are y'alls opinions on it?

Guarding our eyes

THIS post by a wonderful fellow blogger, Ëarwen, has got me thinking, "Am I guarding my eyes well?"

For starters, I read the Inheritance Cycle. I started reading it because some people that I know really liked it. And I was drawn right into it.

Let me tell you, I'm a real sucker for adventure. And that's why I have to be extra careful when I read a book. If I'm not, I'll like it simply because the battles are really awesome, or there's amazing adventure in it. And I tend to brush aside the 'other stuff'...that matters much more than adventure.

Sure, I was bothered when Angela predicts Eragon's future, the Elves declare themselves atheists, that the magic is not an allegory of God's power (as it is in Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia) and that Eragon's love for Arya is more of a lustful crush than real love. But I just ignored it and tried to convince myself, "Well, at least it doesn't have any 'good' sorcerers or anything like that in it."

And then I realized that Eragon and the other riders are basically sorcerers by another name.

After that, I started noticing other things such as Roran and Katrina's disgusting relationship before their marriage. And the book didn't even portray it at wrong! At the most, it was only 'different'.

And that lead to me thinking, "How different is Eragon from Twilight?"

Yikes.

Okay, I have never read Twilight, and I'm not sure if I will. If I do, it will be mixed in with hours of reading my Bible and praying, and it will be when I'm much older. But a Christian review that I read a long while ago (and that I can't find right now...sorry!) said that Bella lies and forsakes her parents for the vampire-dude, who I think is named...Edward? Yeah, anyway, for all of you who have already read Twilight, is that true?

If it is, then wouldn't 1 Corinthians 13:6 apply here? Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth (1 Corinthians 13:6 NIV) You may argue that Edward (if that's the vampire-dude) is a good vampire, but is he really?

If you have read Twilight and know that I have the facts wrong, please correct me.

And because of those verses, I am considered whether or not I should read the last book of the Inheritance Cycle.





P.S. HERE is a review on Twilight. Not the one I was looking for...but I would still suggest it.

Sunsets or Sunrises?

Okay...I know that this has little to do with fantasy, but do you like sunsets or sunrises?

I like sunsets. They're so pretty, with all the red and gold. Go up to Cape Cod and see the sunset there...it's gorgeous! But it's soooooooo fast! You can actually see the sun sinking toward the horizon. I also think sunrises are pretty, though.

Elves vs. Dwarves

At soccer practice today, I realized that I forgot to schedule the weekly debate! Whoops!

Soooooo...Elves or Dwarves? Which one do you like better?

My opinion...I don't have one. I mean, I really like Elves (dude, I am one! Just look at my profile and you'll see it--occupation: Elven-Scribe!), but in FotR (Fellowship of the Ring) I really liked Gimli...and I can't let him down. So it's tied for me!

Arwen or Eowyn?

Due to a whole bunch of awesome comments last debate (should chapters be named or not), I've decided to do a weekly (hopefully) debate! Now, there may be weeks when I can't do it for one reason or other, but I'm hoping that I'll post a debate every Wednesday.

Now, I know that this is a very debated issue, so I hope this doesn't get too out hand...but which do you like better, Arwen or Eowyn?

Personally, I like them both as characters. THIS post, from A Light Unto my Path explains almost exactly what I think. Also, in the books at least, Eowyn always sounds so...discontent and unhappy. It may have just been me.

So what do you think?

Should I name my chapters, or shouldn't I?

Just for the sake of debate...

Which is better, named chapters or unnamed chapters?

My opinion...

I like named chapters. The names give you a small hint, not to big but enough to get you hooked, and adds to the suspense. But then again, unnamed chapters add to the suspense too, because they don't give you any hints.

So, what do y'all think?
